Why the award was established

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was a valued friend of the University of Edinburgh. He was chief guest at the inaugural Edinburgh–India Institute conference in 2014 and received an honorary doctorate from the University.

The award was established to carry forward that connection and Dr Kalam’s belief that education can unlock talent, inspire service and create a better future. It recognises exceptional academic achievement while encouraging each recipient to reflect on how their learning can benefit others.

The values at its heart

Excellence

Recognising the highest standards of academic achievement and intellectual commitment.

Legacy

Keeping alive Dr Kalam’s commitment to learning, aspiration, humility and public service.

Possibility

Encouraging talented young people to use knowledge and imagination to improve the world.

How the award works

  1. Eligible cohort
The award considers students from the relevant on-campus postgraduate taught programmes who were domiciled in India before joining the University.
  2. Academic selection
The recipient is identified through the approved academic process and confirmed by the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. Presentation
The successful student receives a £1,000 award and certificate, normally presented at graduation.
  4. Reflection
The recipient is invited to submit a 1,000-word reflection on their studies, aspirations and the influence of Dr Kalam’s example.

A community effort

The award has been supported by a committee representing members of the Indian diaspora who are helping to build awareness and raise funds for its future.

The committee is chaired by Professor George Palattiyil, Personal Chair of Social Work and Refugee Studies.

“It has been a real honour to lead the establishment of the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Meritorious Award.”
