Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

From humble beginnings to national leadership
Dr Kalam grew up in Rameswaram and worked as a young boy selling newspapers to supplement his family’s income. His determination to learn carried him through school and college to graduate study in Aeronautical Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology in 1957.
His career would span science, technology, public service and education—always shaped by a belief in possibility and a deep commitment to young people.

THE EDINBURGH CONNECTION
A friendship that inspired this award
Dr Kalam was a valued friend of the University of Edinburgh. In 2014, he was chief guest at the inaugural Edinburgh–India Institute conference and was conferred with an honorary doctorate. His visit left a lasting impression and inspired the establishment of an award in his memory.
